One of our family's most cherished camping memories revolves around Mom's adventurous spirit and her knack for surprises. It was a cold evening in Yosemite when Mom decided to treat Dad to a luxurious camping experience by bringing along a water bed. Little did she know, the weather had other plans—plunging temperatures quickly turned her thoughtful gesture into an unexpected challenge.
When Mom unveiled the water bed, it had transformed into a solid block of ice! Initially less than amused by the icy surprise, Dad humorously decided to pack up and book a hotel for the night. Little did he know, this spontaneous turn of events would become a classic story for us kids—a testament to the early adventures shared with Mom. What began as a luxurious idea quickly evolved into one of our most hilarious and enduring camping trips.
That cold night in Yosemite was just the beginning of countless adventures Mom led us on. Her love for spontaneity and creating unforgettable moments always shone through, making every camping trip a cherished chapter in our family's storybook of memories.
Here is a collage of a few camp memories Mom made for me… Graduating from the Junior Ranger Program at Sunset Beach and skipping the first few days of school to do it. Being the first person on the sand in the morning and trying to stay quiet with Mom while everyone slept in (getting the “spirited” spoons in my mouth photo while trying to stay quiet). Finding occasional clams/muscles and bring them back to show off and taste, learning and playing countless card and board games. Intentional camp fires with Dad. Fishing in beautiful spots where Joe and I watched the fish follow our bait and learning how to trick the smart ones. Feeling sorry for killing when we had to gut it, but enjoying the best tasting fish I have ever had. Using what I learned in the junior ranger program to escape a bear and seeking safety as a stowaway on a paid guided tour of Yosemite with Joe…. Thank You.
